New Years Eve in Looe was amazing and really helped to jolly the place up a little in what can only be described as a drab time of year!
Apart from all the jolly behaviour on the ground and the amazing fancy dress costumes the fireworks this year were quite stupendous.
I took about 25 photographs and shot a video too which will follow as soon as I can edit it.
I decided not to upload them straight away as I thought you might be fed up with looking at all the other photos and videos on the web.
Looe fireworks are organised by Michala and Garry Powell. They are the driving force behind an event which helps to promote Looe as the third best place to be on News Years Eve outside London and Edinburgh!
The enormous amount of revenue that these two people help to bring into the town, is in my humble opinion, not recognised widely enough.
The winter season can be a very quiet time for local traders and so all the lovely people who come and stay, buy food, drink and other items over the New Year period, means that both Michala and Gary are helping to sustain one the the most beautiful and amazing seaside towns in Britain – single handedly! Do they get enough support from the local businesses and councils? I’m not sure but I’ve heard they could do with a little more!
Anyway, the fireworks are paid for from donations given by the residents and businesses in Looe and also visitors who leave a little change in the collection boxes dotted throughout the town. It takes a whole year to get the money together and it’s hard work so if you see a collection box, do please drop a few pennies in when you’re passing – every little helps.
To see all the photographs I took of the fireworks visit the Looe Fireworks 2009 gallery.
