Fieldhead Hotel

The Fieldhead Hotel is set in 1.5 acres of terraced gardens in West Looe and is the only hotel in Looe to appear in the Good Hotel Guide 2009, 2010 and 2011!

The hotel has views over Looe Island, free on site parking, a heated outdoor swimming pool (May to September), free wireless internet access and Freeview in all rooms.

Added to the above, every bedroom has en-suite facilities and the Fieldhead has a selection of double, twin, family and single rooms.

For me, the award winning garden is quite special as it includes palms, phormiums and a selection of other plants that thrive here in Cornwall.

West Looe

Being in West Looe, the hotel is situated in a quiet and relaxing location only a minute from West Looe beach. East Looe town centre is a gentle walk and short ferry ride away, across Looe Harbour. You get the best of both worlds when staying at the Fieldhead Hotel.

Hannafore Point Hotel

The Hannafore Point occupies an enviable position on West Looe seafront which makes it a superb place to watch everything from beautiful sunrises to fishing boats returning to Looe Harbour. I’ve witnessed some truly amazing sunrises from the Hannafore Point, many of which are in the Looe Daily Photo project.

Gym, spa and indoor pool

If you go to the gym whilst at home and want to keep your exercise routine going whilst on holiday, then the Hannafore Point Hotel has a fully equipped gym and waves spa with pool. It’s the only hotel in Looe to enjoy these facilities.

Wonderful sea views

Most of the Hannafore Point’s rooms have balcony sea views overlooking the lovely Looe Island and Looe Bay. What’s more you’re so close to the peaceful West Looe seafront that you’ll be able to pop out for a stroll or a longer walk to Polperro along the South West Coastal Path should you fancy it. West Looe is much quieter than East Looe so if you’re looking for a slower, more relaxed pace to your holiday then you’ll probably enjoy West Looe more than East.

Polraen Country House

Polraen is only a few minutes from Looe and makes the most of all the benefits this brings. Peace, calm, tranquility, rural charm and of course, free, easy and level parking! Not something many of the hotels in Looe can offer.

The house

Polraen itself is an attractive, historic building sitting in lovely quiet gardens in the peaceful Looe River Valley. There is a very friendly and relaxed charm about Polraen which you do not get in Looe.

The accommodation

Accommodation consists of five en-suite rooms all tastefully decorated and furnished to a high standard. Facilities within the hotel are excellent and include a large garden, breakfast conservatory, licensed bar and comfortable lounge.

Polraen is a very comfortable and luxurious country house. You will want to return again and again.

Gill and Martin who own and run Polraen have won awards for all manner of things but Martin’s cooking is something special. All diets are catered for and the ingredients are all sourced locally wherever possible.

Larsson’s Licensed Coffee House and Crêperie in Buller Street, East Looe is not just a coffee house, it’s a gastronomic institution.

In the busy heart of Looe, this popular meeting place offers coffee, soft drinks, wines and spirits, food, music evenings and the famous Larsson’s Dining Club.

The ambiance from this warm and inviting coffee crêperie comes from its rustic decor, which has been designed from paintings by Carl Larsson, a well known Swedish artist who painted delightful pictures of his family and home. These are reflected in Larsson’s interior and enjoyed by everyone who visits.

Open seven evenings a week during the summer and at weekends during the winter, Larsson’s is always busy with local and visitors. Maybe it’s the friendly welcome from Martin, the owner, or the mouth watering sweet and savoury French crêpes, paninis, gateaux, cakes, French wine, beer and amazing coffee.

While on the subject of food, Larsson’s crêpes are legendary. There are a dozen or so original savoury Crêpe Platters and the range is altered several times a year for the introduction of new dishes and to bring back some old friends.

At the number one spot for 2011 is the new El Matador Diablo. Smoked bacon and chorizo on spinach and rocket with cayenne mayonnaise and crispy pancetta. More traditional is the Italian Job, with tomato, mozarella and basil. The Skandinavian is a wonderful combo of Emmenthal cheese and smoked salmon, a rich Crême Fraïche sauce, onions and egg yolk. They are all delicious.

For a sweeter experience, try the Käsekuchen mit Schlagsahne. This delicious pudding is German baked cheese cake accompanied by whipped cream. So good, it’s the signature dish of Larsson’s.

If you and your friends like a good blowout then Larsson’s Dining Club won’t disappoint. The Club offers intimate evening dining for Parties (max 12), Families (must get on), Romantic Couples (again, must get on!) and Individualists (don’t mind sharing a table). The meal is three course and includes:

• Antipasta
• Swiss cheese fondue or
• Cornish cheese fondue with apple or
• Breton seafood Crëpe in a white wine, béchamel and parsley sauce – this includes scallops, mussels, crab or prawn depending on season
• Züricher steak with garlic butter, rosti potatoes, salad, schnitzel and more

Music in Looe

In 2009, Larsson’s became a venue for up-and-coming local musicians to showcase their songs and music. It became an instant hit with artists Clare Stokes, Jason Smallwood and Ben Oldfield being just three of the many who have played here.

In August Clare performed her own songs and will be returning over Christmas. Jason, who is a well known local musician and songwriter played several songs from his new album and Ben, new to Cornwall, will be at Larsson’s in October singing a mix of songs.

Finally

The guest’s comments about Larsson’s are to put it simply, very complimentary. The service is second to none, the food and drink is amazing and the conversation intelligent, witty and interesting. People often come back to Looe for a coffee at Larsson’s!
